ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) – There are new security systems headed to elementary schools in one North Texas school district. The Arlington school board is moving ahead to install buzzer/camera systems at all of its 51 elementary schools.
Arlington ISD spokeswoman Amy Casas that there will be a secured process to get inside a school. “Somebody would have to press a buzzer to request entry into the building and then a camera would project the image of the visitor on the monitor in the office, where staff would control the door.”
Doors to the school will be open during normal drop off and pickup times, but anyone wanting access will have to complete several steps before being allowed on a campus. “Once inside the building the visitors will be directed to check into the office and undergo a visitor background check with the Raptor System that we currently have in place,” Casas explained.
There was already a three-year plan in place to increase Arlington ISD school security, but sped up the process after recent events across the country. Casas said, “The incident that happened in Connecticut accelerated some of that, some of those things that are gonna be happening. So what we started really looking at is what are some short-term solutions that we can take right now that will help further enhance security.”
Administrators say the new buzzer/camera system is just the first of many steps the district will be taking to enhance security.
The new security system is expected to cost about $224,000. The district is now looking for vendors.
